Warehousing and Fire Safety — Why Standard Compliance Is Not Enough for High-Rack Storage


Industrial fires rank as the fifth largest business risk in India, according to FICCI's India Risk Survey. Over 11,000 fire accidents are reported across the country in a single year, with warehouses and logistics facilities consistently among the highest-risk locations.

The reason is straightforward: a warehouse concentrates large quantities of combustible material in a confined space, often with limited fire detection coverage, minimal staff on overnight shifts, and a fire safety specification that meets the letter of compliance without adequately addressing the actual fire risk.

Why Standard Floor-Level Coverage Fails in High-Rack Storage

The standard fire safety specification for a warehouse — portable extinguishers at floor level on travel distance intervals — is designed for open floor spaces where a person can see a fire starting and respond within seconds. In a high-rack pallet storage environment with racking at 6, 8, or 10 metres, a fire starting in the upper rack levels is invisible from the floor until it has already grown beyond first-response capacity.

By the time smoke reaches detectors at ceiling level and triggers an alarm, the fire has typically reached a size that requires sustained industrial-volume suppression — not a 9 Kg portable ABC unit.

This is why high-rack storage warehouses require in-rack sprinklers for storage above a certain height, positioned between rack levels to detect and suppress fire at its source rather than waiting for it to reach ceiling detectors.

Trolley Extinguisher Deployment for Large Floor Plates

For large warehouse floor plates, a trolley mounted fire extinguisher provides the discharge capacity and mobility that portable units cannot. A 50 Kg DCP trolley or a 45-litre AFFF foam trolley can be rapidly deployed to a fire location across a large floor area and provides sustained suppression coverage appropriate to the fire volumes possible in a warehouse environment.

Trolley placement in large warehouses should be strategic — at fire access points, near dock doors, and at the ends of main aisles — not simply at travel distance intervals as if the space were an office floor.

Hydrant System Requirements for Large Warehouses

Warehouses above a certain floor area and height require a wet riser hydrant system — not just portable extinguisher coverage. The complete hydrant accessories scope for a large warehouse includes landing valves and hose connections at designated fire points around the perimeter, two-way or four-way inlets for fire brigade connection at the building exterior, and hose boxes at accessible locations within the facility.

Fire brigade access routes around the building perimeter must be maintained and clear at all times. Storing goods against external walls — common in high-utilisation warehouses — blocks fire brigade vehicle access and is a consistent finding in post-incident investigations.

Three Practical Steps for Warehouse Operators

First — review your fire risk against your storage profile. If you are storing combustible goods above 3.5 metres on racking, your fire safety specification needs to address in-rack fire risk, not just floor-level coverage.

Second — ensure your trolley extinguisher deployment plan covers the actual fire access routes in your facility — not just a generic placement on a floor plan.

Third — verify that your hydrant system is functional and that every component has been serviced within the last 12 months. A hydrant system that has not been tested under pressure is not a functional fire defence.
